Thanks for choosing traceroad.net Internet service from the Smithville Telephone Company.

This document shows how to set up Internet access, email and netnews using  common Windows software.  If you need more help, please call our 24-hour toll-free technical assistance number (1-866-602-5212) or call the Smithville Telephone Company at 651-4131.  Additional information is also available at our web site, www.traceroad.net.

This step-by-step example shows the setup of Internet dial access, email and news access using the following information provided by traceroad.net to a hypothetical user, William Faulkner.  He has his account information, is using a computer running Windows 98SE, plans to use Internet Explorer as his browser, and will use Outlook Express for email and reading newsgroups.  The Internet Connection Wizard contained in his Windows software will be used to set up his account.

Mr. Faulkner’s information is:

Access number:                                   (662) 651-8901

Login (user) name:                               sm_wfaulkner

Password:                                              paris56

Email address:                                       wfaulkner@traceroad.net

Incoming mail server:                          mail.traceroad.net

Outgoing mail server:                          smtp.traceroad.net

News server:                                         news.traceroad.net

Step 1

To open the Internet Connection Wizard click on Start then Programs then Accessories then Communications then Internet Connection Wizard.  A screen should open like the example below.  Click on the third option for manual setup and then click Next.

Step 2

The screen shown below should appear.  Select the option to connect by a phone line and click Next.

Step 3

Enter our dial access number, 651-8901.  Do not check the box “Dial using the area code and country code.” Click Next.

Step 4

Enter the Login (user) name you received from us.  If you need to enter the sm_ prefix, the underscore character is a “shift dash” character.  Your user name should be entered in lowercase with no spaces.  Enter your Password in lowercase with no spaces.   Click Next.

Step 5

Type traceroad.net for the connection name.  Click Next.  (These steps will create a dial up networking connection named traceroad.net.  This can be seen by clicking My Computer then Dial-up Networking.  If you wish, you can make a shortcut later on for your desktop by right-clicking the traceroad.net icon.)  The next step starts your email setup.

Email Setup

Step 6

Select the yes option to set up your email account on traceroad.net.  Click Next.

Step 7

Select the option to create a new account and click Next.  You may or may not have entries in the existing account field.

Step 8

Type the name you want people to see when they get email from you.  In this example, Mr. Faulkner has used his full name, but could have typed “Bill Faulkner” or any other name. Click Next.

Step 9

Type in the email address you received from us.   This should be in lowercase and there should be no included spaces.  Note that the first part of  Mr. Faulkner’s email address (wfaulkner) is different from his login or user name (sm_faulkner) that was entered earlier in this example.  Yours may be different or the same.  Click next.

Step 10

Select POP3 from the first pull-down menu if it is not already shown.  Enter the incoming (mail.traceroad.net) and outgoing (smtp.traceroad.net) server names as shown.  Notice there are no @ signs in these server names.  Click Next.

Step 11

Enter your User (login) name.  In this example, Mr. Faulkner enters sm_wfaulkner, the same as for Internet access login shown in Step 4 above.  You can check the Remember password or not.  If you don’t check it, you may be prompted to enter your password when you access your email account.  (This information is used if you start Outlook Express directly without your Internet Explorer browser being open.)

Step 12

You can select the box to connect immediately or not.  Click Finish.

News Setup (Optional)

These steps can be completed at any later time.  Outlook Express contains a newsreader so you can access the very large number of network newsgroups that cover almost any topic imaginable.  Please note that a posting to a newsgroup contains your email address and you may get junk email as a result.

Step 14

Open Outlook Express and select Tools then Accounts then click the News tab and then Add then News.  The following window will appear.  Enter the name you would like others to know you by and click Next.

Step 15

Enter your email address if you want to receive email as a result of posting or replying to netnews.

Step 16

Enter the name for our news server (news.traceroad.net).  Note there is no @ in the server name.

Step 17

Click finish to complete your news setup.
